The short answer
A butterfly cut suits you if your hair is past your shoulders and has any wave or body at all. It suits round, square and oval faces especially well. It gives volume at the cheekbones, keeps all of your length and is easy to style with a round brush or a big wand.
The one group it does not suit is women with very fine, straight hair. The short tier has nothing to push against and the cut looks like two separate haircuts.
What a butterfly cut actually is
A butterfly cut is long hair with two sets of layers. The top set is short: it ends around the jaw or the cheekbones and frames the face. The bottom set is long: it stays at the chest or the mid-back. Blow-dried away from the face, the top layers flick out like wings, which is where the name comes from.
The trick of the cut is that from the front it reads as a short, bouncy style. From the back, the hair is still long. You get the lift of a lob with none of the commitment.
Face shapes it flatters
- Round faces. The short tier ending at the jaw pulls the eye down and adds length. Ask for the face-framing pieces to end below the chin, not at the cheek.
- Square faces. Layers that curl away from the jaw soften the angles. The butterfly cut does this better than almost any other long style.
- Oval faces. Everything works. Pick the tier length you like.
- Heart faces. Works if the short tier ends at the jaw, where a heart face needs width. Short tiers that stop at the cheekbone widen the top of the face instead.
Long faces need the tiers to stop short of the jaw so the width sits at the cheeks. Ask for “short layers at the cheekbone, not the chin”.

Say “butterfly cut” and then add three things:
- Where the short tier ends. Jaw, chin or cheekbone. This decides how the cut sits on your face shape.
- That the long tier keeps your current length.
- Whether you want curtain bangs. They are usually included, and they are optional.
Ask for the face-framing layers to be cut while you sit up straight and look ahead. Layers cut with your head tilted end up uneven once you stand.
